Austin Jackson's research and teaching interests include writing and rhetoric, cultural studies, and critical social theory. His doctoral dissertation explored the potential of rap, hip hop, and other forms of Black rhetorical and cultural production for enhancing both academic and critical literacy in college composition. He has helped coordinate the activities of the My Brother’s Keeper Program for at-risk Black males in Detroit, and is the co-author of several published articles exploring the links between the teaching of rhetoric and writing with popular struggles for racial, social, and economic justice. He also advises and helps organize campus student organizations devoted to issues of racial, social, and economic justice.
